Miss Minnie always has at least one kind of cookie on hand for anyone who pays a visit.. sometimes there are three or four batches filling old tins lined up along her kitchen counter. Some of the smaller kitties find her ginger biscuits a little too hot but she grinds in a dash of black pepper anyway with old Granny's wooden peppermill, which is almost black with age and the touch of many paws and she breathes in the smell of ginger and spice and blackstrap molasses and goes back to that tiny hodge-podge kitchen, her granny's shuffle between the sink and table and oven, the faded apron draped over the chair back giving off the faint perfume of lilacs as they sit at the table and bite into cookies still too warm, tears starting to their eyes.
