spun cotton starter supply kit (updated in December 2024), my favorite materials for making cotton animal sculptures

from $68.00

My favorite supplies for spun cotton as of December 2024 ☺️ I've added a few things I've discovered in the last few months so that this kit is a little more versatile - you can still make mice with it - but you can also make some of the more recent things we’ve made in make-alongs, like the bird ornaments.

This kit has evolved over the past year and is not strictly for making cotton mice, so the printed materials that go along with it are changing and you may receive cards and stickers slightly different from those shown. That said, you can still order the make a mouse booklet to go with your kit, if you like. (I’m working on new photos of the kit without the booklet)

(Again, as I like to remind you - you don’t need the fancy supplies - cotton balls work fine especially for your first attempts)

But because many of you ask for kits or to know exactly what I use, here you go :)

This kit contains:

12 grams of cotton “sliver” this is the long fiber you use for “spinning” or wrapping your armature (I don’t wrap armatures for all sculptures but this is demonstrated in the “Let’s make a cute little mouse” video on YouTube

1.5 ounce of organic cotton fiber (this is my fiber of choice right now and I prefer it over the others and have replaced cotton “punis” with this, in part because I like this fiber and partly because I’ve had trouble keeping punis in supply

2 types of cotton quilt batting

12 cotton chenille pipe cleaners, 6 inches long

6, 14 inch lengths of paper covered 24 gauge wire

8, 12 inch lengths of paper covered 26 gauge wire

3 feet of uncoated 24 gauge wire

mica powder and mica flakes

A good number of black beads for eyes (in three sizes, I just eyeball it and put in quite a few)

6 pairs of glass eyes on posts in two sizes, appropriate for mice or other small animals

And some other little goodies which might vary a bit in color and design depending on the season 😊

Watch a short demonstration of how to use the cotton fibers in your kit here

**You can choose if you want to add on the “Cotton mice are rather nice” pocket picture book which features a number of new original illustrations.

This kit would make at least 6 to 8 small mice or other small sculptures (the size I make, which is about 2 or 2.5 inches tall, (as I make in this video tutorial and this photo blog) - it depends on the size of your figurines but you should definitely be able to complete several sculptures.

This kit does NOT include glue or paint - you will need to supply those as well as scissors and paint brushes.

All proceeds from the sales of this kit go directly to the Sweet Haven animals and provide for their food, shelter and care.

Thank you so much xo Rosanna
